Following receipt of a report from the ITF on October 2, 2025, the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) initiated immediate steps to verify and address the situation onboard the vessel CHICHI (Ex Norhern Orion). The Guyna Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard conducted an onboard inspection on October 5th, 2025, and confirmed the conditions reported by the ITF.
Upon confirmation by the Coast Guard, MARAD through the office of the Registrar of Seafarers communicated with a representative of the vessel and emphasized the urgent need to rectify the issues identified. On October 13th, 2025, the Captain reported that crew wages were settled, fuel, food, and water were supplied, and two crew members repatriated. The ITF was also apprised of these developments.
MARAD remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of all Seafarers in Guyana.

The shipowner has only made partial payments of wages, never in full. The vessel has been anchored in an isolated location at a river entrance for 3 months. There is not enough diesel to run the generators permanently. Food is provided irregularly. Half of the crew want to be repatriated the owners have been promising to repatriate the crew for the past two month
