(From the International relations division Azerbaijan)
Further to your email concerning the abandonment of the General cargo ship Magnat (IMO No. 7529639), we would like to provide an update based on the official letter dated 13 August 2026 from the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Bulgaria.
Following our request, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan instructed the Embassy to provide the necessary consular assistance. The Embassy contacted the Azerbaijani seafarers, the ITF representative in Bulgaria and the relevant Bulgarian authorities, verified the seafarers’ documents, and provided legal and practical guidance.
Three Azerbaijani seafarers—Mr. ***, Mr. *** and Mr. ***—requested consular assistance. As a result of the measures taken, the outstanding wages of Mr. *** and Mr. *** were paid by the shipowner on 12 August 2026. Payment of Mr. *** outstanding wages remained under the Embassy’s follow-up.
Regarding repatriation, the shipowner proposed providing bus tickets from Burgas to Istanbul, followed by air tickets from Istanbul to Baku, to be arranged separately by the company’s representative in Istanbul. The three seafarers requested that their repatriation from Burgas to Baku be arranged fully and confirmed in advance. The Embassy therefore coordinated with the relevant Bulgarian authorities, including the border police, regarding the necessary transit visas and departure formalities. It was confirmed that the seafarers’ travel documents were valid and that there were no documentary obstacles to their departure. At the date of the Embassy’s letter, finalization of the complete repatriation route remained pending.
The other three Azerbaijani crew members—Mr. ***, Mr. *** and Mr. ***—confirmed that they were not facing any problems and did not require consular assistance at that time.
We will share any further updates with you as soon as they are received.
