(From the Permanent Mission to the IMO)
The Permanent Mission of Barbados to the International Maritime Organization acknowledges receipt of your correspondence regarding the Bulk Carrier ‘New Faith’, IMO Number 9191034, Flag: Barbados, having on board 1 seafarer from Sudan who was abandoned in Kandla, India on 11 August 2026.
Please note that the International Transport worker’s Federation (ITF) notified of the outstanding wages for the Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) on 25 August 2026. On follow up of this case as a formal MLC complaint, the managers of M/V New Faith advised the following:
“Regarding the specific case, the seafarer concerned is a Sudanese national who requested to receive his wages entirely in cash, as he does not have a bank account or alternative means for home allotment transfers.
Although the managers made arrangements to facilitate payment, the availability of USD cash in port was subject to local restrictions. Furthermore, the vessel remained at anchorage in Kandla, India for an extended period, which contributed to the delay in obtaining the required cash.
Upon berthing on 24 August 2026, the Master offered the seafarer USD 1,000 as a partial payment, which he declined, insisting on receiving the full outstanding amount in cash. A transfer to his family was also proposed but was likewise declined.
The seafarer’s monthly wage is USD 2,000, and he had been onboard for approximately two months. On 25 August 2026, upon receipt of the remaining USD cash from the local agent, the seafarer was paid in full for all outstanding wages, as evidenced by the attached payment confirmation.”
The confirmation of payment of wages is enclosed for your reference. The case was closed on 26 August 2026 on the basis of satisfactory supporting evidence.
